Buttloads of Beer, Bad Ideas, and One Very Questionable Snake

The latest episode of the Craft Beer Republic podcast starts the same way a lot of good nights do: solid music, a great beer, and zero intention of talking about medieval units of measurement. Somehow, it ends with both hosts agreeing that carrying a dead snake might be a viable legal strategy, and that mugs are objectively the worst way to drink beer.

This week, Greg and Flex cover a wide stretch of craft beer territory, from hazy IPAs and disco ball cans to beer horror stories that refuse to stay buried. There’s actual beer education, listener emails that probably should have stayed private, and just enough math to make everyone question brewery memberships forever.

The Beers on the Table

Flex kicks things off with Disco Party from Evil Twin Brewing, a double IPA blended with Sauvignon Blanc grape juice that was selected by his kid based entirely on vibes and packaging. Surprisingly, that strategy works. Greg follows with Culture Vulture Hazy IPA from Fall Brewing, a citrus-heavy hazy that delivers orange zest up front with a little hop burn tagging along for the ride.

As always, the beer talk stays grounded in real drinking experiences, not tasting notes that sound like a wine exam. These are beers you’d actually talk about at a bar, which is kind of the point.

Beer Horror Stories Are Back (Whether We Like It or Not)

A listener email pulls the show right back into beer trauma territory with a bottle-conditioned saison described as “poop adjacent.” It’s barnyard-heavy, aggressively funky, and apparently unforgettable in the worst way. That opens the door for Greg and Flex to revisit their own worst beer experiences, including metallic stouts, highly rated beers they genuinely do not understand, and the uncomfortable realization that Untappd ratings can’t always be trusted.

If you’ve ever finished a beer out of spite or loyalty rather than enjoyment, this part of the episode will feel very familiar.

Brewery Memberships, Mug Clubs, and Doing the Math

The conversation takes a turn into brewery memberships and mug clubs, and why so many of them sound better on paper than they feel in real life. Greg lays out the math behind one recent membership announcement and realizes you’d need to commit to a very specific drinking schedule to make it make sense. Flex counters with the idea that supporting a brewery isn’t always about “getting your money back,” but even then, nobody can get behind the mug.

If you’ve ever looked at a brewery email and thought, “This feels like homework,” this segment is for you.

Obscure Beer Terms and a Very Real Buttload

In one of the more educational moments of the episode, the guys explain that “buttload” is an actual historical unit of measurement, clocking in at 126 gallons. This leads to exactly the kind of reactions you’d expect, plus a reminder that beer history is often way more practical, and way funnier, than people realize.

Booze News Gets Weird

The episode wraps up with booze news that somehow escalates quickly. There’s a DUI involving open Modelos and a conveniently sliced lime, a reminder that rice lager is now officially recognized by the Brewers Association, and a story out of India where a drunk driver allegedly tried to threaten police with a dead snake and briefly got away.

It’s the kind of headline run that makes you grateful you’re just listening.

Why This Episode Works

“Buttloads of Beer” is a strong snapshot of what Craft Beer Republic does best. It blends real craft beer discussion with stories that feel pulled straight from group texts, brewery patios, and bad decisions made after happy hour. There’s no preaching, no pretending, and no overthinking it.

If you like craft beer podcasts that sound like actual people who drink beer for fun, this one’s worth your time.

Listen to the latest episode of Craft Beer Republic wherever you get your podcasts, and bring a buttload of patience for mugs while you’re at it.
